Unprecedented Velocity.
During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, it had become clear to us that finding a vaccination slot was going to be a very difficult task in Hyderabad, India, so we started a project to collect vaccination slot data by tracking CoWIN API. CoWIN is an Indian government web portal for COVID-19 vaccination registration, owned and operated by India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
And soon the data started revealing interesting and useful information that could potentially help one find a slot with very little effort.
We realized that this information must not be used for self-preservation rather must lead to a more meaningful outcome that can benefit the underprivileged and especially those who were hurt by the pandemic in ways we cannot even begin to imagine.
Soon, with the help of a volunteer developer and the open-source community, we were able to further enhance this project and achieve full automation of the slot booking process, and we did it efficiently. We integrated the JIRA service management system to track and review requests, and AWS services to initiate automation on demand and in a pipeline. We ensured to run automation only for people in need and refrained to run it for our own selves as a matter of principle.
